Is it a particular sequence of DNA that codes for a particular sequence of amino acids that are represented by the RNA transcriptions? Is it the segment of RNA which is post transcriptionally modified? Should we include upstream codons as part of a gene if they modulate its function?
Genetics is just as theoretical as evolutionary theory: every model is wrong, some are useful.
