There is a school of thought that considers that many fetishes and paraphilias are the result of sublimation of a fear-arousal response to a phobia stimulus into sexual desire as a form of psychological preservation or processing of previous trauma
e.g. people who are paraphilic in the form of bondage or masochism or breath play for example have a natural innate fear of kidnapping, bodily harm or suffocation in a dangerous scenario, but become sexually aroused by the idea in a controlled environment
Ergo I suggest to you that the 'homophobes' you saw being aroused by homosexuality are not closet homosexuals masquerading with homophobia, but natural homphobes (or victims of traumatic childhood experiences) masquerading with "homosexuality" to compartmentalise their trauma or suffering a wayward fear-arousal response as a paraphilia
