I can somewhat relate to the being "comfortable in the group", in my case I switched out of that spot while in school but went all the way and became kind of a class clown despite feeling anxious as fuck it was so exhausting, I'd get home and be drained all die because I wasn't being myself. That was important though, like you, I think that just getting out there and putting myself in stressful social situations on purpose taught me how to gauge the level of intensity you need to be with people and definitely helped me notice those little social cues, etc. I wish you the best Irish bro.
