If you can still remember how you felt during the dream you could describe that and leave everything else as vague as possible. The reader's imagination will fill in the blanks with what he associates those feelings with and so you will have created something more or less equally scary for everyone.
Supposedly keeping a dream journal can help you remember dreams more easily. Perhaps I should consider keeping one myself.
