There was 10 guys who worked together and hunted (any more than this isn't necessarily helpful for hunting), who had ~8 wives each, and their respective children.
Enforced monogamy came about as a result of civilization, in which more than 10 men were required for all of the labour needed for basic agriculture, particularly irrigation ditches in the river valleys (Nile, Tigris and Euphrates, Indus, Yellow). These situations were the easiest, which is why they became the strongest, however it also requires mass participation of dozens of men for the same population. The problem being that no man has an incentive to do anything without a wife. Those societies which gave every man who worked a wife, with some input from the women and the family that the woman came from (e.g looksmatching), became the norm as the most effective means of stable social development which allowed for population grown. That population growth allowed the civilizations to defeat the hunter-gatherers through sheer numbers, even if those hunter-gatherer males of 10 guys were better 1-on-1 than that of anyone in the agricultural societies, the agricultural towns had 1000 people, of which 250 were men and could through sheer weight of numbers defeat their enemies.
It's not a coincidence at all that as enforced monogamy breaks down, society collapses. The evolutionary mating psychology of women is incompatible with civilization. We will learn this lesson the hard way over the next 20 years as civilization collapses and those that remain have to pick up the pieces. Shame I will be almost 50 by then.
