there is a story even if it's not some massive sprawling narrative and not having experience/levels/minor stats doesn't mean there isn't progression heavily gated behind questing, preparing, and often grinding.
it's definitely far more accurate to call it an ARPG than just an RPG but the same can be said about calling it an ARPG instead of an action game.
either way my point stands that there are enough systems that the core gameplay isn't really something you can form an opinion on within 2 hours especially since it changes gradually for a very long time due to its RPG elements.
this is all just about monster hunter world though. i've never really tried the old games too seriously.
