The problem most people have with the 2002 version is that they weren't ready to acknowledge the dystopian reality they live in. It is really heavy on the fake news media angle and ultimately Petrovich is an allegory for the devil because he owns everyone's soul. After watching it somewhere between fifty and a hundred times in a single year I can say it is packed with layers of allegory and detail that most would be very surprised by.
