While Luther may have had some points, ultimately the ideology itself broke the authority, control, and unity under the Pontiff in most of Europe at the time. Now obviously the Byzantines broke off, but they didn't make drastic changes like rejecting all of the saints and stuff like that, disregarding confession to a Priest, and etc. Furthermore the Protestant Reformation led to the Age of Enlightenment which ultimately fucked us all over. Democracies/Republics can't work in major senses, and even in smaller sense like the Italian Merchant Republics, they were more or less all controlled by one giant family who mostly dictated everything like the Medici banking family for example.
