With Christopher Hitchens I truly get the impression of a man who sold his soul to be perceived in a certain way. You're also correct that he was terrible at debates. He just told his audience what they already wanted to hear and was considered a genius by them for the rest of the new atheist movement. Ironically, the atheist-Youtuber golden age only lasted about 10 years after his death, and he is now pretty much forgotten in the mainstream/outright hated by the left. He was part of the European socialism which was transplanted in the 2010s by Bay Area socialism, more focused on things like gender and race.
