The general population has been priced out of living in urban centers and are forced to live in abandoned rural towns on the edge of nothing. They're slaves to their gas prices, licensing, inspections, and car payments, but they seem to think that driving a vehicle that be remotely operated into a brick wall at top speed (see Michael Hastings) is "freedom." In other words, they are completely brainwashed. Fully demoralized, you can't even reason with them about it. They truly love their enemy, the car, which sucks all the value out of their existence.
