To me, the British way is more honourable. It harkens back to a more ancient warrior spirit of aristocracy and manhood. You defeat your enemy in combat, you destroy his gods and conquers is land. But you also grant him death out of respect, he gets to die honourably like man.
It's how it used to be for great warrior races like the Germanics, the Romans and the Japanese.
