Red hair is nothing more than a mixture of brown and blond hair. As a matter of fact, in many cases, the blond goes grey first, and the redhead becomes brown-haired, before becoming white haired.
We do seem to have more than our fair share of important people in history, especially with how rare the color is, but that could be due to any number of social influences, I doubt the hair color has a lot to do with it.
And you can find pretty & ugly people with any color hair, so anecdotal pics mean nothing. I married a redhead, and all my kids have red hair, so I'm doing my part to save the species.
