The "SSRIs cause mass shootings" meme is a result of two things:
First of all, murders are not usually a SURPRISE. The typical murderer has WANTED TO commit severe violence for a long time before the attack. Murderers who have a shred of decency in them will struggle to resist the urge - and they will seek help. Murderers who DON'T want to resist the urge may be pressured into seeking (or at least pretending to seek) help. And our front-line treatment for "Doc, I keep wanting to commit mass murder" is... SSRIs. Take the recent Nazi attack on New York. The timeline there was:
>Gelding threatens to do a Columbine-style attack on a school>Gelding is forced into psychiatric care>Gelding gets a gun>Gelding murders a bunch of peopleWhile the ACTUAL MURDERS came after the psych care, the INTENT to murder came beforehand.
Second of all, the subtitle of Dianetics is "The Modern Science of Mental Health". Dianetics - the core of Scientology - is a form of psychiatry where you try to treat the mental illnesses you accrued in past lives. At higher levels, you try to treat the mental illnesses the alien ghosts hanging out in various body parts accrued in THEIR past lives. Since this doesn't actually help most patients, Scientology has been running a decades-long shilling campaign to discredit competing psychiatric schools. They especially hate psych drugs, because their founder thought being publicly anti-drug would keep people from noticing he was a VERY heavy drug user.
