back in the iraq war days, the iraqi security forces used a bendy metal rod to detect explosives. the rod was inert, no mechanical or electronic action of any kind, but it did bend in an interesting manner, and it did make a better impression than just eyeballing somebody. rambling here but i wonder if you see my point? merchants made a fortune selling bendy rods to the pentagon. it didn't matter if they worked or not. there was a perceived need, a ready solution, and an urgent and harried government throwing money at a problem.
