That said the light bulbs could have been made to last about twice as long with almost no drop in performance. So it's 100% true they were made to last what was tested to be an acceptable time in the minds of the consumer to maximize sales. Even today we can't buy LEDs running at lower power with more LEDS making the same light but lasting longer and using less overall power.
