The most dangerous particles are those that decay fast. If you say I have a a hunk of radioactive stuff that has a half life of a million years its perfectly fine to give a child to play with. A half life of 10 minutes you want to stay far away from.
As long as you have distance away from the explosion and time to wait out the decay everything will be fine. Strip and dispose of the top soil after and get back to life.
