The interpersonal relationships are the most important theme, and every character just goes through life outright bungling everything up for everyone else to varying degrees and then dying tragically. Medieval heraldry and court protocol would be useful previous knowledge for sure.
Watching everyone's empires fall to bits for no good reason other than "the king wanted to get laid" or "well, I just don't like that guy's dumb face" is fascinating, and seeing how opportunistic factions react and profit from everyone else's failures even moreso. Morality is never a motivator for any but the most doomed of characters, which is as refreshing as it is frustrating.
Throw in just a dash of high fantasy and an occasional dragon and I had my face just glued into those books for two straight weeks my first time through.
