well that's part of why i put wasted in quotes. it's usually not time that's completely dead, but it's more about random personal experience or anything.
people either not going to uni then deciding they should go after all, going to uni for a while then dropping out and doing something that doesn't require a degree, finishing uni then getting a job that wouldn't have required the degree in the first place, getting a degree then working in the field for a while and hating it then doing something entirely different (sometimes going back to uni again for a degree in that)
