The only way to make time go slower is to compress space, and compressing space would also make these caves into real underground realms.
They also describe the inside environment in the same way - there is never any sun, the sky is either permanent overcast or black, but the ground level is well illuminated anyway and not by human tier artificial means, its like the light comes out of the air. In hinduism these underground realms are called "patalas", and there are far more such realms than the seven that the hindus know. Pic related is the story of a guy who almost got abducted into one. There are many of these pockets, and they are populated by a wide vareity of sentient entities. These are not necessarily fond of each other. Bigfoots come from one or several such pockets. The lizards live in multiple ones. So do the small blondes too - the entities we call fairys or alvs/elfs.
