if i were studying something applied like math i could bury my head in a book for 8 hours straight and it would be less effective than studying 4 hours today and 4 hours tomorrow, but only a bit. when you're just trying to memorize something in a vacuum though it gets to the point that more time looking at flash cards doesn't really help more than just doing something else and letting the information some subconsciously.
between this post and your last i actually got recommended an exact video about this exact process of reading/listening and then looking stuff up and it also outlined that looking stuff up as you read something is really helpful. granted the main talking point of the video was about not overdoing it and trying to limit yourself to only looking things up intermittently even if there's a ton of words you don't understand since it defeats the purpose to look up every other word and you're more likely to remember to look up words you've seen multiple times so it ends up being an effective way to prioritize frequency
did you end up learning very much spanish?
