Love Live! and dragonmaid are pretty bad examples. To me, they aren't all that great. I enjoyed dragonmaid but the only things it had going for it were painfully cute moments and light ecchi.
As for recent anime I love Little Witch Academia because it not only has a great story but it's basically Good Vibes: The Show, and I found konosuba to be awesome too in terms of humor and story (the ecchi is a bonus).
Older shows generally have better plots, so if you're looking for that and not just the escapism then give that a shot. I've only watched like 10 chinese cartoons though because I only recently picked it up.
That's it. For me, it really fills a void in my life.
