One could predict the maximum number of cubes in such a configuration, however.
Also, a further complication: One could imagine that "cube" need not necessarily refer to a single individual object (represented by a square in the image) but also each meta-construct of 2x2x2 cubes, 3x3x3 cubes, etc. Having seen MANY attempts to post such "gotcha" IQ tests on 4chan, I can say with confidence that this ambiguity is intentional, as it allows the OP the chance to say any given answer is wrong by changing the rules mid-stride.
