I liked Counterparts too. It's perhaps the most intimate of the stories. In that aspect it might be better than The Dead, even.
I didn't like Clay. I can't really pinpoint why. I felt distanced from both the prose and its contents.

Alternatively, To The Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf. It's much better in my opinion and the prose is beautiful. Exactly the kind of stuff I like to read.
