Kare Kano is widely regarded as being the same way, except the ending wasn't as bad as Darling at least from what I've heard of it. Even if the final stretch of the series was comparatively less engaging, the first sixteen are so enthralling and full of life that you don't even really care when that last stretch eventually arrives since you can easily coast off the vibes of what came before it.

I thought it was a pretty good series too that made the most of the concept without ever running out of steam. Definitely exceeded what I thought A1 was capable of.
