I always recommend the Sony IDF-SW7600GR to newbs because it's relatively inexpensive for what you get, which is a great quality Made In Japan radio with the fairly rare AM Sync feature in addition to the usual stuff like SSB. Also if you can afford it, the matching AN-LP1 loop antenna is nice, it's directional so you can cancel local interference or home in on signals.
Once you have more experience you will know what sort of features you want in a receiver, but the Sony is a great radio. Really though, any shortwave radio you can find which will receive SSB will get you your Skykang fix. External antenna capability is important too IMHO.
