Free will wouldn't exist, if God would control you like an automaton.
This is not the same as malevolent (= having or showing a wish to do evil to others), since otherwise Heaven, the reward of the obedient believer, couldn't be real as a concept but a deliberate deception.
And that's not loving God, since providing a free will & the moral codex as the blue print towards the reward speak for his love.
