Arata is too busy/was too busy feeling sorry for himself for years and then made Chihaya cry after she went and saw him. Taichi went there, protected her from him, and then was there for her as she cried on the train back home.
I'm not saying Arata is out of the game yet, but he's got to score some major points in the area of caring for Chihaya for him to take the lead again.
