The fact that it's set up to be a sequel to one of the best classics out there while completely changing the tone, almost changing the genre entirely and being from a different era really dampened everything, you expect more and the entire time watching it you're comparing it to the first.
Diebuster would have been fantastic as a standalone, but being a sequel ruins it because the mind's always making comparisons to Gunbuster.
Diebuster's still better than FLCL or Gurren Lagann though.
