Maybe you're right that all emotions aren't that different, heartbreak is probably just depression caused by a breakup.
The intensity varies definitely by what the situation is but the base emotion stay the same.
There could be something to this but i dunno, not a psychologist.

They're not as colorful when they're young but that just makes them cuter!
They've got smaller beaks and sometimes have floofy feathers, depending on how old they are, once had one with an afro.
They also make really cute squeaks.
