£15 million worth of drugs intercepted in England

In the first incident, at around 6.40am on Sunday (6 September), officers stopped a Slovenian registered lorry which had arrived on a ferry from Calais carrying electronic equipment. They searched the vehicle and found 96 kilos of the drugs which had been hidden in a pallet and had a potential street value of around £4.3 million.

Shortly afterwards a second lorry, also Slovenian registered, was stopped and found to contain items removed from the first lorry to make room for the drugs. Both drivers were arrested and the investigation was referred to the National Crime Agency (NCA).

In the second incident, which happened at around 10am on the same day, Border Force officers stopped a British-registered coach which had also arrived on a ferry from Calais. They searched the vehicle, which was not carrying any passengers, and found 240 kilos of cocaine with a potential street value of around £11 million in a space behind the steps onto the coach. A 53-year-old British man, who was driving the vehicle, and a second man, also British, were arrested and the investigation referred to the NCA.

$94 million drug bust in Trinidad has international links

Investigators in Bucks County have dismantled a drug ring they say was distributing as much as 20 pounds of methamphetamine throughout the region each week, earning nearly a million dollars in profits at a time.

The drug “empire," as District Attorney Matt Weintraub called it, was allegedly run by William “Beetle” Jefferson, 57, who was charged late Thursday with racketeering, conspiracy, and felony drug charges.

“They certainly were a scourge in Bucks County,” Weintraub said Friday. “They weaved a poisonous web all across our county.”

Jefferson remained jailed on $200,000 bail. It was unclear Friday if he had retained an attorney.

According to the report, based on confidential files, interviews and observations; drug criminals routinely threaten the safety of airport staff at the largest airport in the Netherlands. As a result of inadequate safety measures, the researchers noted, criminals are able to breach secured areas to access aircrafts, baggage control areas and airfreight systems in order to fetch the trafficked drugs, which include quantities of cocaine, ecstasy and heroin.

Spearheaded by investigative agency Bureau Beke and commissioned by the Haarlemmermeer municipality, the report asserted that a "code of silence is enforced in the workplace, harshly if necessary, through bullying, intimidation and violence," adding that routine work at the airport "is a perfect cover for theft and especially drug smuggling".

Employees who hold access passes to secure areas of Schiphol are subjected to such intimidation after first being recruited into the criminal network, Bureau Beke states.

At street level, drugs are also being moved around in larger quantities. NCA intelligence reveals dealers are less likely to offer sales of, for instance, single rocks of crack cocaine and instead are offering bulk deals to limit interaction with users.

Disguise, said Gibbons, had also become an established tactic for street dealers. “Many disguise themselves as key workers – some as couriers with yellow high-vis slips to look as though they are making official deliveries [medical supplies].

“Others have changed their timings so they only work certain times of the day or night, rather than a 24/7 service.” he added.

Although global drug production in countries such as Colombia and Afghanistan, where heroin is produced, has remained largely unaffected by the pandemic, localised shortages in the UK have seen the price of heroin double in some places.

In the last five years, Mexican cartels have increasingly upped the production of synthetic drugs and smuggling to the US to keep up with the increased demand across the border.

Mexican cartels import ephedrine and benzyl methyl ketone (BMK) - precursors of crystal meth - from China, transform it into methamphetamine on Mexican soil, and then ship the drug to the US. The coronavirus lockdown in China, however, has caused Chinese companies to operate at 50 percent capacity, severely affecting the cartels' ability to import the chemicals they need to produce meth. This has led to an unprecedented increase in meth prices. As prices skyrocket, Mexican and US meth users will likely look for substitutes.

Crystal meth can be substituted with crack cocaine, which comes from Colombia. Due to this shift, the logistics of the drug supply chain in South America will play a fundamental role in sustaining Mexican cartels during the current crisis.

Three people were arrested following seizures from two separate trucks at the channel port, according to a press release from the National Crime Agency (NCA).

Officers found 140 kilograms (309 pounds) of cocaine in a truck carrying a shipment of paper and card from the Netherlands, and 50 kilograms (110 pounds) in a second truck carrying toy building blocks. The two seizures on Monday are not thought to be connected, according to the NCA.

Gerrit Van Eckeveld, 62, from Nieuwegein in the Netherlands, was arrested by Border Force officers in relation to the larger haul. The cocaine was found in a void in the floor of the truck, police said.

The criminal case emerged three years ago with the seizure of more than 10 kilograms of fentanyl, more than $500,000 cash and the arrest of an oddball cast — a pediatrician, a barber and a horse groomer. The seizure — including enough fentanyl to kill 5 million people — and arrests drew widespread attention amid the global opioid crisis.

In recent months, the case has widened with a nationwide manhunt and arrests of 14 other members of an alleged drug ring disrupted after investigators found a clue on the box of a Sony PlayStation.

A grand jury returned an indictment against the defendants Feb. 25.

Federal agents arrested them on Thursday with assistance from state and local law enforcement.

But international travel restrictions to reduce the spread of COVID-19 have greatly reduced traffic at ports of entry. U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers who previously could perform comprehensive inspections only on a fraction of vehicles now have more time to look for drugs.

This is leading to large seizures and forcing drug trafficking organizations to revert to old tactics — like sending drug mules across the desert or have them swim past the Rio Grande, law-enforcement experts say.

“They’re still getting narcotics at the ports of entry, but what’s interesting is that Border Patrol is seeing more seizures between ports in some places where they had a downward slide for the past several years,” said Victor M. Manjarrez, a former U.S. Border Patrol chief in Tucson and El Paso.
