People with Body Integrity Disorder have perfectly functional bodies, however their brain's mental map of the body is off to the extent it excludes some of their limbs. This makes the limbs feel horribly wrong and alien in their mind, so they want the limbs removed despite there being nothing wrong with their arms or legs.
In the same sense that I don't think we should encourage these people to destroy their perfectly functional bodies to treat the symptoms of their sick brain, I don't think we should encourage people with gender dysphoria to mutilate themselves or tell someone with Schizophrenia that their hallucinations are real.
More research should be invested in finding treatments for the malady focusing on the part that is sick, the brain, rather than catering to it by destroying the part that is fine. I hear tests with anti-psychotics were effective.
