Anime used to have much more episodes in the 80s, but throughout the 90s, 00s and 10s shows have been progressively shorter by cutting away most of the filler.
A good chunk of anime that reach between 30-70 episodes can be trimmed down to 12 episodes and maybe another 12 episode season and still get the story across.
