People don't throw friendships away easily most of the time. Most of us here have been hurt and probably on occasion inflicted hurts and so on so we're nervous about losing people but what he asked is basically a bro moment. He might very well love you but unless he's built a complicated structure around his feelings he won't do anything silly, and if he had he wouldn't have asked for that. He'd have some complicated scenario to complete before beginning your magical new life together. Just smack him and all will be ok eventually.
