I made countless friends posting in different forums in the 00s, from all over the globe too. Some became irl friends, others merged into friend groups that I kept in touch with for years, and I even met my first girlfriend in one of these groups.
Making friends just felt easier under this format, you'd see the same users again and again so you naturally developed affinity for some of them, and by the time you two started talking you already had plenty in common, so it felt very organic.
