Now that Austin's mind broke again and is stuck on "me gigachad" cope mode, here's one of my tinfoil hat theories:
Austin doesn't truly love Betty, but he wants to possess the sex icon of Betty that he made up in his mind. It explains why he's still stuck in the past and has ignored whatever the "current" Betty has been telling him to do (leave for good). He recently also called Betty an "ugly boomer" and he's put off by her current niches last thread.
