Marcus Aurelius was a late Roman, and unsurprisingly his views are in line with the decadence around himself, an empire that in about 100 years would face a life threatening crisis that would leave it so changed that it wouldn't survive much longer, nothing unusual, his wasn't the glorious Rome of the Republic anymore, but likewise you can see why it has appeal in this analogous era.
