Eventually, it should be made the main working language of the EU, but Standard German kind of sucks for non-natives. The language is rock hard, with its 4 cases, loads of time tenses with indistinct uses, separable verbs, etc.
So it should be a variety of German that is simpler. Luxembourgish would be an obvious candidate: it basically has only 2 grammatical cases and is otherwise dumbed down. Swiss German would be another choice, which also has only 2 cases, but unlike Luxembourgish doesn't have a written codified standard. So Luxembourgish it is.
tl;dr: Luxembourgish should become the lingua franca of Europe and the West.
