>>10829413This chart is your friend. For a beginner, a paraphrase or thought-for-thought translation might be better, but for closely studying the bible, a word-for-word translation will be better. I'm a big fan of the the HCSB, I've read it up to Ezra and have really enjoyed it. NRSV is good too. King James has beautiful language, and if you want something truly medieval, but readable, the Tyndale Bible is cool (but kind of novelty in the modern age).
