there's one thing i forgot to mention but actually a big thing that changed the face of internet culture is the commercialization when companies realized there was this vast untapped resource and potential to advertise their shit.
i guess it all goes hand in hand with social media taking off but once the plebs started using the internet the vampiric commercial attention came with it. with that came the need to sanitize everything too, you can't advertise on a youtube video if a guy is screaming nigger over and over again. intellectual property rights is getting enforced a lot more.
