I do believe there have been divergent species in the hominid family tree, Neanderthals are an accepted one, for instance, but I think there have been others (Paracus men, for instance), but I hesitate to accept a form of intelligent, Earth-spawned, life form that is not related to humans at all.
Of all the various forms of life on Earth, hominids are the only ones we've seen exhibit higher intelligence.
I'm not adverse to the possibility, but I need more information and proof, before I consider it seriously.
