Note how towards the end of the diagram, the path of light (shown in pink/red line) travels almost horizontally through the clouds/ thick atmosphere to reach you thus filtering out most of the light and leaving a visual aura. This is also the reason the sun becomes redder in colour as the atmosphere filters out the higher light frequencies. On a globular earth, the colour wouldn't change this dramatically.
Note how at the end of its path, all that is left is the light being absorbed by the clouds reflected back into the eye of the viewer. From another perspective this would appear to be circular in shape and moving downwards below the horizon.
