They didnt carve out the original Sphinx either. Water errosion marks at the base are so deep it needed couple of thousand years of water to run through it, and the last time it was green and humid in Egypt and Africa was atleast 9.000 years ago. So when the Sphinx was originally carved/built, we're talking about times when our ancestors were still closer to chimps than to humans.
When egyptians came in they stumbled on what was left of the original Sphinx and recarved it. Which begs the question, who built it, for what, and where did the original builders come from?
