Like in Shirobako the director of the anime that they're creating has just come back to the industry after bungling his last production so horrendously that he took a leave of absence to recover from the fallout, which makes for heightened stakes on his part to make his return series great as well as the rest of the staff to realize that goal. Of course if you make it sound like a boardroom meeting it won't be as interesting, which is why it's also a drama in them being able to finish the production on time.
