I think it was At the Mountains of Madness where he spent an almost absurd amount of time describing the plane being used, or of little gorey penguin death but when it came to the big thing causing it, he didn't really do the best job describing exactly what I'm supposed to imagine. I get that it wasn't supposed to be some typical creature or alien, but the description we got was just kind of.... not great.
I mean, you look at the artwork of Astounding Stories and you think "Fuck! That looks awesome!" but then you read it and ... I dunno. Maybe this is more my problem.
And I'm not saying that a giant, fleshy creature with no discernible beginning or end, comprising almost entirely of eyes, mouths and hands can't be scary because it can. You just have to describe it in the same detail that the plane or something was described.
