The real problem is that you cannot feasibly make mega structures out of limestone without modern construction support anyway. Skyscrapers must be cladded with stone and ornamentation.
When these historic buildings were constructed, cladding and ornamentation were signals of wealth. Nowadays mass production makes cladding and ornamentation cheap so wealthy people don’t bother. The only reason to build this way is out of intense cultural or national pride which is why you only see government buildings still being built this way.
