You actually use the Autobahn which was designed to make freeways around the preexisting infrastructure. Americans used the General Motorway Plan which was shown in the Futurama exhibition in circa 1938. This was the idea of General Motors and the Shell Oil Company. As you can see in the model, they are the ones responsible for America's current day infrastructure and freeway system.
