Its obvious from the way he was acting that he lost interest around that time and all of his interactions from that point onward were extremely formal rather than containing the levity and humor they had. Compare his early interactions with Tay like when he was riffing on Nifty with Tay in the bunk and his later interactions towards the end of the season where he barely talked to any of the fish. About the only thing funny he did one-on-one was the bed time story with Trish.
