read the book "space marine" and the old anthology "dark imperium" and the blurbs about lore from the old rulebooks
everything post hh is gay, it's ruined. 40k was fun when history was foggy because they lost it. we didn't need to know what happened, or if it even did. that uncertainty was part of the flavor
