Although they watched television occasionally, they lived their lives essentially free from media brainwashing. I often wonder what life was like prior to our age of metanarratives and social engineering. People must have been able to parse their thoughts without passing them through the wrongthink machine, and despite having access to far less information than we have in this age, that must have led to a much clearer and more direct thought process.
What bothers me the most is the vast majority of people act is if the current timeline is inevitable and unavoidable. It's as if everything is set in stone with no possibility of alteration. I guess that's how empires ossify and eventually die.
