There's a distinction in Britain between the Anglo-Saxons and Celts which was roughly marked by the frontiers between arable and grazing land. The Saxon and Norman influence is largely confined to the English, while the Micks and Jocks exchanged freely.
The Norseman angle here is interesting. They established little fiefdoms on the outer islands, and it wasn't until the 20th century that their progeny dispersed and mixed with the mainlanders. Many were engaged in slate quarrying on the islands of Argyle and left for the Lanarkshire coal fields after the first war. They have since steadily fucked off to the rest of the English-speaking world, largely engaged in extraction industries.
It's unrecognizable now with so many non-natives all over the place.
